Abstract

This article presents results of the participatory action research Project “Co-innovation for the sustainable development of the family cattle raising in the Sierras del Este”. The project is financed by the National Institute of Agricultural Research and is implemented by the Agriculture College (Social Sciences Department) and the Agricultural Plan Institute (Extension Agency, east office). Three organizations of producers located in the east region of Uruguay take part in the project. The project begun in 2017 and is expected to finish in 2021. Intervention strategy is based on three key action areas: i) producer farm, ii) group of producers, and iii) organization of producers. Target population covers 200 producers while indirect beneficiaries reach 650 producers. The main results obtained at present are: i) three workshops of participatory rural diagnosis carried out to identify problems, ii) innovation regional system identified, iii) three groups of producers developed, 10 training days carried out, and advisory services to the three organizations, iv) main actions identified to articulation to the value chain, v) implementation of the participatory monitoring and evaluation system, and vi) empowerment of producers as critic, reflective and cooperative persons (this outcome emerges as a consequence of previous results).
