Essential oil yield and 1,8-cineole percentage were studied for nine Uruguayan grown Eucalyptus species and subspecies. Within the more cultivated species with good potential for essential oil production, possible sources of variation of variables related to oil production were studied. Results show that three subspecies of E. globulus, E. viminalis, E. smithii, E. badjensis y E. bosistoana are promising for essential oil production, with essential oil yield equal or higher than 1.00 % and 1,8–cineole percentage higher than 75 %. Within the three subspecies of E. globulus the sources of variation harvest year, geographic situation, leaf type, harvest season and subspecies, were statistically significant for some essential oil production related variables.
